Currently, there are some ongoing treaty processes being conducted with the government and the Haida people. The most important one is land claims. This is because there is a lot of land that had been taken away from the Haida and never really returned in full. They deserve compensation and blankets or tools just won’t cut it. The government and the Haida people have been working hard in order to meet at the middle but nothing has come of it so far. The Haida have been awarded a few acres of land over the past years, but that isn’t clearly enough, comparing to the amount they lost. The Government is trying to come to piece with the Haida and they are trying to get a treaty signed. That treaty would consist of the right to the Haida’s land back and many more things. So basically, the Government and the Haida are working hard and hopefully sooner than later, they meet together on a solid ground and get a deal done.

Ongoing Treaty Process
History from past to now
The Haida tribe from the past to present has changed a lot and to avoid extinction, change is needed. The Haida lived in poverty in the past and were barely able to provide food for their family. Things have changed a bit now, but more change is still needed. In order to have a successful life, more financial aid is needed to be given to the Haida people. In the past, the Haida people were getting assimilated by the government but now, the government has a new found respect for them. All the hard work and determination basically finally paid off. The Haida tribe worked hard in the past, so the future generation can enjoy freedom like they are right now. There have been a lot of tough negotiations and court cases that got the Haida where they are today, and the history behind all this is just a piece of art.
Responsible Claims
These claims are responsible because this is what will allow the Haida people strive for the extra work. They’d be better off with these new claims and it’d be the best for everyone. They should be entitled to more land, more money and self-government because they have proven that they are hard working and trustworthy. I as a representative of the Haida tribe am basically looking out for the best interest of everyone’s needs. These claims can bring a positive future as much negativity will not come out of this. So this is my plea to the public to ensure them that these claims are responsible and legitimate.
Self-Government Issues
The last issue between the Haida people and the Government of British Columbia is that the Haida tribe should be able to have self-government. They should have self-government because other tribes have it too, like the Cree. The Haida people have proven to be loyal and trustworthy, so self-government isn’t out of the question. I believe they deserve self-government because things would be better run by themselves. They would be able to have a government elected by them to specifically watch over them and pay more attention, so more issues would be solved quicker and faster. More people would get united and everyone would become closer. This claim is responsible and having it would end up with pure success. So basically, I believe the Haida people are ready for self-government and I hope you, the public, can agree on this too.
Money Issue
Another issue between the Haida people and the Government of British Columbia is that the Haida are not given enough compensation. They are basically not given enough money to live their lives to the fullest. For their land being taken away, they deserve more money and that is a necessity. The First Nations people deserve more money and that is one thing that the public should understand. These people are responsible and do good things with their money and it only seems right if they get a lump of cash. The compensation that they have been getting now can barely support a family and we need some money to fully support them and then some. So basically an issue between these 2 groups is money as one side isn’t being funded enough from the other.
